Information for Accompanying Staff

Leader: An adult member of staff is expected to accompany all groups and is expected to participate in the activity. They are also responsible for the behaviour and discipline of the group, particularly outside of the normal activity session.

NOTE: If groups are taking a lunch break between sessions, it is very important that the member of staff remain closely in contact and in control of the group, especially in the Avonquay and Baltic Wharf locations where there are serious hazards involving water, craft, vehicles and moving machinery associated with the Docks.

If you find it necessary to have more than 1 member of staff, please understand that we cannot guarantee that all staff will participate as safety numbers may be exceeded.

Accompanying staff also have a serious role within the activity session and are an adult back-up to the instructor and must remain with the group until the session is completed.

It is important that members of staff know their group, have a good relationship with them and have made sure that the group understand what they are embarking on. They should have personal details of all group members.

In some of the activities, participants will get very wet and very muddy and it is important that staff ensure that young people come prepared with the appropriate change of clothes and towel where necessary.

Group leaders must also ensure that the Centre is notified of participants with specific special needs in advance, to ascertain if they are able to participate. This information also needs to be passed on to the instructor of your session beforehand.
